Camp060 - Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
Camp060 - Mount Kilimanjaro National Park - climb to the roof of Africa!
Mount Kilimanjaro borrows its name from a Maasai word meaning Large Rock. Kilimanjaro is 340 km south of the Equator, 280 km from the Indian Ocean and just over 400 km from Lake Victoria. It is about one hour’s drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Born of the catastrophic movements in the Earth's crust that created the Great Rift Valley that runs from the Red Sea through Tanzania to Southern Africa, Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano, and is one of the most massive in the world.
Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Although it does not have the highest elevation, Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain rise in the world, rising 4,600 m (15,100 ft) from its base, and includes the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,340 ft), providing a dramatic view from the surrounding plains.
This great mountain creates a micro-climate around itself and the rain-shadow created to the South and East supplies the beautiful and superbly fertile lands. For the adventurous, a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro is a must taking you through the mists of equatorial jungle to reach the snows and breath-taking views from the summit.
Climbing up Mount Kilimanjaro is a very rewarding experience, and is a must for fit adventure-seekers. Experienced guides, accompanied by porters, lead visitors to the top of the mountain via the established six routes, passing through a variety of vegetation - forests, alpine vegetation, semi-desert, moorland - before reaching the icy top. Visitors can arrange such tours from Moshi or Arusha with the climbs taking anywhere from 5-8 days.
Kilimanjaro, by any name, is a metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa. When you see it, you will understand why. Not only is this the highest peak on the African continent; it is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland – elevation around 900 metres – to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336 feet).
