Camp051 - Tsavo East - Tsavo West National Park > The Largest Park in Kenya!
Camp051 - Tsavo East - Tsavo West - Explore unadulterated wilderness!
Tsavo is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. The combined area of Tsavo East and West National Parks - 21,000 square kms of rolling plains and scrubby vegetation - scales the park in at a size larger than Wales in Great Britain or Jamaica in the Caribbean. Due to its size the park was split into two - Tsavo West and Tsavo East - for easier administration. Tsavo is the ideal destination for people who seek privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness. The Northern part of Tsavo East may not, however, be visited by tourists.
With its proximity to Mombasa (less than 100 km away) it is also a great safari option for those staying on the coast or those planning to relax on Kenya's beaches after a dusty safari. Tsavo also combines well with the nearby Amboseli National Park. In spite of its arid countryside and savannah vegetation, about 60 species of mammals and 400 different species of birds are to be found here. Large herds of elephants, lions, Burchell's zebra, the beautiful lesser kudu, a variety of antelope and cheetah can be spotted here.
Tsavo West has more than 2000 km of well maintained, all weather, roads. Good signposting leads the visitor from one natural wonder to another. Chief among these must rank the marvel of Mzima Springs, replenished with two hundred and twenty million litres of crystal-clear water every day, from the underground streams stemming from the lava massif known as the Chyulu Hills, 40-50 km away. Not far from Mzima Springs, lies the magnificent Ngulia escarpment at the foot of the Ngulia Hills which rises to 1825 m. The northern area of Tsavo west which is the most developed offers great scenery that is best enjoyed at the end of the rainy season when nature has bloomed.
Across the highway from Tsavo West is Tsavo East. Famous for its large numbers of elephant and spectacular herds of up to 1000 buffalo, has more open savannah. The best game viewing is along the watercourses and at the Kanderi swamp, which is not far from the main Voi gate.
