Camp049 - Samburu Game Reserve - Kenya´s Northern Frontier!
Home of the Samburu pastoralists, Samburu, and Shaba National Reserves are characteristic of the environs of northern Kenya. At approximately 325 kilometers north of Nairobi, the Samburu Game Reserve lies in the hot and arid fringes of Kenya's Northern Frontier. The dry grasslands dotted with volcanic peaks offer a refuge to rarely found species such as the Beisa oryx, blue-necked Somali ostrich, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk, all of which have adapted to the arid environment. However, its permanent river insures a wide variety of game and close up sightings of elephants are frequent.
The first thing you'll notice on a Samburu safari is that it differs from the other parks in Kenya. It's not particularly well-known and as a result is less crowded. The Reserve is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the dry northern reaches of Kenya. It is a hot and arid area characterised by a parched landscape of hills and plains.
The long-necked gerenuk - a graceful antelope, which spends much of its time standing on it's hind legs whilst seeking succulence among the withered scrub, which dots this harsh terrain. Other animals commonly seen are elephants, lions, cheetahs, gerenuks, buffalos, grants gazelles, dikdiks and waterbucks. For the bird watchers, around 365 species have been recorded and the river area is particularly rewarding.
